For 8 days, from the 21st to the 28th of March 2024 in Montreal, young from Aboriginals communities, Quebecers, French and Belgians will learn about the different realities of the Aboriginals reality through unifying activities to which everyone can contribute!
The Offices jeunesse internationaux du Québec and the Week of Action against Racism and for Equal Opportunities (Semaine d'actions contre le racisme et pour l'égalité des chances (SACR)), in collaboration with the Office franco-québécois pour la jeunesse (OFQJ) in France and the Bureau International Jeunesse (BIJ) in Belgium, are implementing the youth component of SACR 2024, which will focus on bringing Quebec and Aboriginal peoples closer together.
Do not hesitate to apply if you are between 18 and 35 years old and interested in this unique experience!
The context
The Semaine d'actions contre le racisme (SACR) was created in 1999 to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1966. On the occasion of its 25th anniversary, the SACR wishes to pay tribute to the first inhabitants of Quebec and to raise awareness among the non-indigenous population of the different realities experienced by the First Nations and Inuit of the territory.
In Quebec, non-Aboriginals and Aboriginals know very little about each other. Most citizens are still largely unaware of the pre-colonial, colonial and contemporary histories of Aboriginal peoples and their own historical narratives. And yet, with our similarities and our differences, we could all benefit from knowing each other better. To meet each other respectfully, as equals, from person to person, from nation to nation.
A series of field meetings with Aboriginal organizations will provide a better understanding of their cultures, as well as historical and contemporary perspectives on the origins of Aboriginal discrimination, racism and prejudice. Discussion forums on the realities of racism in France, Quebec and Belgium will provide food for thought.
